Who we are

Femmes Ingénieurs is made up of women who graduated from a wide range of engineering schools and scientific women who are or were in the engineering profession. The association was founded in 1982 following a meeting among women engineers from the AFFDU (Association Française des Femmes diplômées d'université). The pioneers were engineering students in the 1920s and they had to fight to enroll in engineering schools.

Our list of activities reflects completely the objectives of the association as expressed in the bylaws. It represents 42 years of activity among women engineers in France and abroad.

How?At the local level, we:

Intervene in Junior High, High School and universities
Broaden our communication using various means including interviews with journalists, and participating in exhibitions with other regional institutions or companies
Participate in the jury of scientific and technical prices
Contribute actively in think tanks to promote the development of all initiatives on the subject
Sift through the data of the CNISF study on women engineers (14th study, 2001) so as to establish statistics on the women engineering population in France
Widen our network by building closer relationships with affiliates.

At the international level, we:

Participate in ICWES (International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists
Represent the women engineers of western Europe in INWES (International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists)
Participate in the debates organized by IIWE (International Institute of Women in Engineering)
Participate in the work of the unit "Femmes et Sciences" of the Research sector of the European Commission.

Some numbers:

In 2000, there were 78,000 women engineers in France, of which 94% were active. The population is young with 50% of those women being 30 years old or younger. Despite, women make up only 16% of the engineering population, but 23% of the engineering students. The objective of Femmes Ingénieurs is therefore aimed at the young ladies, but it is also to promote the engineering profession in the industry, within diverse teams that are complimentary.
